16th Annual Jakes Day held last weekend

A total of 88 young anglers took part in the 16th Annual Butler County Longbeard's Jakes Day event last weekend on the Haynes Family property in the Leonard Oak community of  Butler County.

Bayleigh Alford

According to organizers, the lake was stocked with approximately 800 pounds of fish - several pounds of which were caught.  Prizes were given for catching an Albino catfish - Bayleigh Alford - but she threw the fish back into the lake.  Additionally, three turtles were caught - Carson Carroll, Wyatt Johnson, and Ethan Cox.  Jeff Graham won the Marlin .22 caliber rifle.  All proceeds from the sale of the rifle will benefit the Jakes Day event in 2015.

Bennie Morris from Greenville came and brought his snake display - a favorite with the kids.    KY Department of Fish and Wildlife representative Justin Hensley was there to help kids learn out to throw out a line correctly.     "The weather cooperated with us and we are going to return to the Haynes family property next year," said Deniece Hawkins, one of the organizers.   "Also thanks for everyone who helps, donated items and support us each year."

The Butler County Longbeards hosts its Wild Turkey Banquet in March and Jakes Day again in June each year.   If anyone would like to help us out, just give Deniece a call at 270-934-2600.

Sponsors for the event include IGA, McDonald's, Jenkins Bait Company, Connica Outdoors, Smith Store, RC Cola, Lindsey's Market, D&G Hunting & Archery, Haynes Family, Uncle Lee's, Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, Bennie Morris, Luke-Haley-Georgia Pacific, Jason Groves, Texas Roadhouse, and friend Paula Sue.
