Vehicle Overturned Resulting in Child Being Flown Out

**UPDATE**  Twenty three month old Elijah Smith succumbed to his injuries today and was pronounced dead at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center at approx. 11:41 am.

The investigation is still ongoing and no other details are available for release at this time.

(Morgantown, KY)-  The Kentucky State Police Post 3 Bowling Green responded to a report of a single vehicle injury collision on Thanksgiving evening at approx. 5:10 pm on the William Natcher Parkway near the 21 mile marker that involved a vehicle overturning several times.
 
The preliminary investigation indicated that Jeffery Smith (26) of Bowling Green was operating a 2006 Chevrolet passenger car and was traveling northbound on the William Natcher Parkway when he went off the left shoulder of the roadway and then over-corrected where he lost control of his vehicle.  The vehicle then overturned several times and came to final rest on the right shoulder of the roadway.

Jeffery Smith, along with one of his passengers, Madison Smith (3), were transported from the scene by the Butler County EMS to the Medical Center in Bowling Green for non-life threatening injuries.  Elijah Smith (23 months) was flown from the scene by AirEvac to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition.  Smith was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision and both children were in child restraint devices.
 
The investigation is still ongoing and being led by Trooper Kevin Mayfield.  He was assisted on the scene by Sergeant Tucker Carmichael and Trooper Josh Amos, Morgantown Volunteer Fire Department, Butler County Rescue Squad, Butler County EMS, and AirEvac.
