Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Schools will soon be closing for the holidays, and many families will look for a couple of family-friendly, entertaining activities. Many parents – and grandparents – search for something that the young ones will enjoy. Some interesting activities are available within our region.

Some possible activities might include:
•    Ice skating: Edge Ice Center in Owensboro (next to Sports Center; call for hours at 270-687-8720; admission ranges from $5-$6, including skates).
•    Movie Theaters or movie rentals: Afternoon matinees are always fun – in the theater or at home.
•    Horse Carriage Farm Christmas Rides:  December 18 and following, 6 p.m.-10 p.m., at 765 Richpond Rockfield Road (Rockfield, KY 42274) for $5 per rider, under 6 free (sit on parent’s lap). For more information contact:

•    Dollar Days for Kentucky Residents at the National Corvette Museum, Bowling Green,
Dec. 19-Jan. 1. Residents of Kentucky receive admission to the Museum for only $1 with proof of residency. Info: 800-538-3883 or www.corvettemuseum.org (http://www.wbko.com/community).
•    Some churches provide live nativity scenes before Christmas.
•    Community or church Christmas programs: These programs are usually free as well as uplifting and entertaining.
•    Christmas Lights: An evening drive to see Christmas lights can provide entertainment for all ages. Opryland (Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center) and Freeman Lake Park (100 Freeman Lake Road, Elizabethtown; free admission, but donations accepted) have great light displays, but a drive through nearby residential areas may be enough for younger children.
•    For adults: Murder Mystery at the Knights Hall on Dec. 31, 8 p.m. to Midnight, at 911 Searcy Way, Bowling Green, KY 42103. Celebrate the New Year in a class with a murder mystery in the Roaring 20's. Flapper and Gangster era attire are encouraged. RSVP by 12/26/14 to Jason Cabral at [email protected] ($15 per person and $25 for couples).

One night during the holidays, I hope to entertain my two young granddaughters. They’re pretty easy to please. For them, being together, having a movie or Netflix and some food guarantees a good time. But, I’m sure they would also enjoy some of the activities listed above.

When schools close for the holidays, most children will search for entertainment. Scheduling a family activity might make the holidays more pleasant. So, plan an activity or two, and enjoy the holiday.
