Board of Education Sponsors August Chamber Luncheon

On Thursday August 28, the monthly Chamber of Commerce luncheon was held at the Butler County Extension office. This event was sponsored by the Butler County Board of Education with Superintendent Scott Howard scheduled as the primary speaker. Many prominent members of the community and Chamber of Commerce were in attendance. Representative C.B Emby and Congressman Brett Guthrie were also present.

The event began with the meal, which was prepared by Green River Catering and consisting of mashed potatoes, rolls, ham, fresh corn, pork, and a multitude of other items including dessert. Following the meal, James Runion called the beginning of the meeting by welcoming Scott Howard to the podium. Howard's presentation was entitled "Effective Strategies For Tough Times".

Before beginning the presentation, Howard stated that the school year began very well, with only a few misplaced high school students who deliberately took the wrong bus after school in an attempt to ride home with their friends. He reminded the guests that the school system has 350 employees as well as a registered dietician to meet the needs of students with specialized nutritional situations. He addressed concerns regarding the CEP (Community Eligibility Program) which would enable all schools to eventually host breakfast and lunch entirely free of charge. Although it isn't currently financially feasible to honor the program, Howard is hopeful that it will be a part of the school system in the future, likely beginning with the elementary schools and eventually progressing to the intermediate and high school.

Howard then began the brunt of his presentation, underlining the definition of leadership and how it is an elusive concept that rests at the intersection of art and science. He stated that it is important to deal with people by getting out of the office, building strong alliances, and relying on persuasion instead of coercing. Regarding character, Howard said that honesty and integrity are both the best policy. Although as humans we find it difficult to not act out of spite and vengeance, it is very important to not do so. We must retain the courage to positively respond to unjust criticism. Regarding endeavor, it is important to exercise a strong hand and be decisive and lead by being led. Surround yourself with intelligent people and always encourage innovation.

The qualities exhibited within his presentation were a direct derivative of Abraham Lincoln who used his wisdom and level head to resolve the civil war. Howard then ended his presentation by wishing everyone a great year from the School System. He reminds everyone that he honors an open door policy and will make time to discuss concerns from the community.

Members from Butler County Family Care were present to introduce themselves. They look forward to integrating themselves into the Butler County community and will be opening Tuesday, September 2nd.

James Runion took the podium to thank the guests for attending and highlight upcoming events, including Harvest on the Square which is set for October 25th.
