Beware of Telephone Scam

The Morgantown Police Department has been advised of a telephone scam in Morgantown.  A citizen told Morgantown Police she received a call with the area code 876 on Thursday, December 18,2014, advising her to buy a green dot card, put $275 on it and she could possibly win $85,500 and a GMC Denali.  The citizen said she was advised the “contest” was similar to the Publisher’s Clearing House.  While on the telephone with the individual, she was able to notify law enforcement and Officer Denny Deweese responded to the call for service.  Before the citizen ended the conversation, Officer Deweese was able to speak with the person who called.  Officer Deweese said when he identified himself as law enforcement; the caller used threatening language, cursed him and hung up.  Officer Deweese also said the person her spoke with had a foreign accent- possibly Jamaican.
A Google search of area code 876 revealed this particular area code is from Jamaica.  Information revealed on the Google search said if your phone rings and the caller ID shows an 876 area code, while it appears the call is coming from the United States, be cautious with this Jamaican area code.  If you do not have friends, relatives or business associated in Jamaica, there is probably a scammer on the other end of the line.
