Bears pound Cougars 46-6 in season opener

Despite an offensive burst out of the gate by Logan County, the Butler County Bears roared back on Friday night to rout the visiting Cougars 46-6 on the opening night of the high school football season.  Three quick runs by the Cougars pushed the ball downfield to inside the Bears' 5-yard line.  There, Butler County's defense made a goal-line stand on four straight plays to keep the Cougars out of the end zone.

Butler County got on the board in the first quarter on an interception by Rex Henderson, who took the ball 56 yards for the touchdown.  Butler kicker Logan Richardson made the extra point to give the Bears a 7-0 lead.  Late in the quarter, Blake Graham scored from 23 yards out; Richardson's point-after-kick made the score 14-0.
Butler's air attack got going in the second quarter with Henderson connecting with Ian Embry (5 yards) and with Brendan Shanklin (20 yards) for a pair of touchdowns.  Richardson's PAT kick was wide on the first touchdown but Henderson passed to Graham after the second one for a two-point conversion.  Butler held a 26-0 lead at halftime.

All didn't go well for Butler County in the second quarter, however, as receiver Gage Ward went down after a hard hit.  Ward suffered a broken leg and was treated by Butler County EMS from the game and was later transported by helicopter to Vanderbilt University Hospital for treatment.  He had surgery on Saturday and is doing well.

Logan got on the board at the 10:07 mark of the third quarter on 49-yard run.
The Bears put the game out of reach with two touchdowns in the third and another in the fourth.  Dillon Brosnan scored from two-yards out and Henderson passed to Graham for eight yards.  Richardson's kick was good both times.
Leading 40-6, Butler County's final score came with 9:07 left in the game.  The Henderson-Graham tandem found the end zone again for the 10-yard touchdown.  Richardson's kick was blocked.

Butler County had 344 yards of total offense.  Henderson was 17 for 25 for 182 yards in the air.  He also tallied 69 rushing yards.  The team had 162 rushing yards in 30 attempts.  The Bears had 20 first downs and completed 5 of 9 third down conversion attempts. Blake Graham had 44 yards on 8 carries; Dillon Brosnan had 33 yards on 10 carries; Houston Hampton had 13 yards on 3 carries; Ian Embry picked up three yards on one rushing attempt.

Defensively, Jacob Courtenay led the way with seven solo tackles, followed by Isaac Flener with five, Dillon Brosnan with three, Blake Graham, Patton Allen, Ty Smith, and Jacob Hixenbaugh all had two apiece.

Butler kicker Logan Richardson had three extra-point kicks in addition to three punts for 86 yards.
