Bears Baseball 8-9

file photo by Tiffany Jones

The Bears Baseball team has started off the 2014 season with an 8-9 record through its first 17 games.  The Bears have had some impressive wins over Owensboro, Russellville and Warren East as well as a district record of 2-1 which includes two key wins over Whitesville Trinity.  The team has battled through key injuries to Senior Clark Parker and Freshman Ty Burden and have rallied together to play some really competitive and winning baseball.

The Bears have been led on the mound by Senior Caleb Hunt (2-3, 27 IP, 2.59 ERA) and Junior Cody Casteel (1-2, 22 IP, 0.63 ERA).  Junior Eddie Phelps (2 wins), Junior Conner Reed (1 win) and Freshman Blake Graham (2 Wins) have been the winning pitchers in the remaining games.

Offensively, the Bears have showed a lot of balance with key hits coming from multiple players this season.  The team on-base percentage is over .400 and they have averaged 5.5 runs per game.  Blake Graham is leading the team with a .422 batting average and the Bears have 8 players with an on-base percentage of .300 or greater.

The Bears have a busy week this week as they will play Owensboro Catholic on Tuesday night in the first round of the All A Classic.  If they can pick up a win, they will play in the 3rd Region finals on Wednesday night.   The Bears also will travel to Franklin Simpson on Thursday and Logan County on Saturday.
