With a 6-3 record so far, the 2015 Butler County Middle School softball team is off to a good start.  The Bears have recorded wins over Hancock County (7-5), Glasgow (6-5), Barren County (13-0), and Russellville (10-0).  The team's one loss came at Logan County (6-3).  This past weekend, B.C.M.S. played in a round-robin tournament at Christian County.  The Bears defeated Warren East-B 9-0 and Lyon County 8-0 but lost 4-1 to Calloway County and 9-4 to Christian.

With a roster of 25 players, the B.C.M.S. Bears have several returning players with plenty of playing experience.  The team features ten 8th graders, eleven 7th graders, and four 6th graders.

8th graders are (back row, L to R):  Jacie Ward (2B), Shalyn Bratcher (SS), Hannah Chaney (C/OF), Evyn Frazier (P/IF), Bayleigh Alford (OF), Emma Easley (OF/1B), Haley Peach (1B/OF), Ashley Thacker (3B/IF), Kailie Beasley (OF), and Breanna Gidcumb (OF).

7th grade team members are (back row, L to R):  Conley Moore (OF), Autumn Searles (OF/C), Leslee Washer (P, IF/OF), Aubrey Clark (1B/IF), Audrey Deweese (OF/IF), Kaleigh Proctor (OF), Jessilyn Embry (OF/1B), Andrea Deweese (SS/2B/3B), Aleace Hall (OF/IF),
Aliceson Hunt (P/3B), and Autumn Proctor (C/OF).

6th graders are (L to R):   Kaylee Dockery (P/IF/OF), Gracie Cardwell (IF/OF/C), MaKinna Embry (IF/OF), and Taylin Clark (OF/IF).

"We have a solid 8th grade class and several 7th graders with a lot of playing experience," said John Embry, B.C.M.S. head coach.  "We're going to be relying on their leadership as we move through our season.  We've gotten off to a good start but we have plenty of tough opponents remaining on our schedule."

Despite the good start, Coach Embry still sees room for improvement.

"We've done a lot of things well so far but have at times struggled with consistency.  Whether in the pitching circle, defensively, or at the plate, one of our main goals this season is to try to turn in an all-around consistent performance each time we take the field," said Embry.  "This is a great group of girls with a lot of ability and good attitudes.  They play well together and we're looking forward to a fun season."

The Bears will play a 30-plus game schedule that features tournaments at Christian County, Todd County Central, Allen County-Scottsville, and the Middle School State Tournament at Owensboro.  Butler County will also be hosting a tournament in September with Ohio County, St. Mary, and Apollo participating.

Assistant middle school coaches are Jack Clark and James White.

"Jack and James do a great job working with the kids.  They know the game, can teach it, and they put in countless hours above and beyond what is really expected.  Our softball program is fortunate to have them on staff," said Embry.
