Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain

With Easter upon us this Sunday, every church across the country will be celebrating Easter in some for or fashion.  Easter is not just Peeps, candy and the Easter Bunny.  All that stuff is fine, but our main focus should be the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Our church has a sunrise service with breakfast afterwards.  Later at 10 am, Sunday school begins.  In the 11:00 am hour, we have an Easter cantata.  This year’s theme, as it should be, is Come to the Cross.  We’ll sing some numbers from that book, there’s even a solo involved in one of the songs, and then a bit of preaching.
Several of the adults will hide the eggs for kids to hunt, as happens annually.  Everyone is always dressed to the nines.  I remember last year.  It was raining the entire day.  We went out to hide the eggs.  The guys had to roll up our pants legs so we wouldn’t get our pants muddy.  Our shoes, on the other hand, bore the brunt of the muddy yard.  I cleaned them afterwards.  It’s supposed to be 75 degrees this year, so a much better set of circumstances weather-wise.
Easter Sunday is one of my favorite Sundays of the year because of the ceremonial things I just mentioned, though not solely because of that.  When I’m up in the choir singing, even at practices but especially on Easter Sunday, I’m thinking about why we’re singing.  It’s all wrapped up in one of my favorite hymns, “He Arose”.
Matthew 28 is where the story of the Resurrection begins: After the Sabbath, at the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.  2) there was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.  His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.
The angel said to the woman, “Do not be afraid, for I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.  He is not here; He has risen, just as He said.
The story continues until the end of Matthew, the resurrection in chapter 28.  If you’ve not read it, or even if you have, go read it.  I hope everyone has a blessed Easter.
