450 local children to benefit from Toys for Tots

Butler County's Toy for Tots program has succeeded in helping local families and children in having a brighter Christmas.  The program is coordinated by the Bulter County Family Resource Center (F.R.C.), the Butler County Youth Service Center, and the Morgantown Mission.

According to Daisy Bishop, F.R.C. Coordinator, 180-plus families signed up to participate in the Toys for Tots this year, representing 450 children in Butler County.   Applications from in county residents only were accepted.  As of 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, 139 families had showed up to shop.  In addition several families are adopted by businesses, families, churches, and individuals.  TVA employees adopted six families this year and provided their Christmas, according to Bishop. The employees have fund raising throughout the year to provide this gift to Toys for Tots.

Volunteers assisted shoppers and helped park cars.

“We try to help families in need so children will have a better Christmas,” said Karla Coles, YSC Coordinator.

Several groups, companies, and individuals donated money and /or toys this year. Toystock, a concert benefit, was also held on Saturday night at the Butler County High School Gym, to raise money.  A new toy or a $5 donation was collected at the door. Marty Brown, John King and Mud River Revival, and Kyle Whitaker performed.  According to Bishop, the event raised approximately $1,600 to $2,000.
Parents were able to select: two toys, a book, and mittens/gloves, and/ or scarf, and two stocking stuffers for each child and one board game/movie for the family.  The outer wear was donated from the Morgantown Methodist Church Christmas Tree.  Butler County Food Service workers also donated food baskets.
